What is Electronic Lien & Title (ELT)?

The paperless process that allows the state agencies to send an ELT title with a lien to the lien holder and allows the lien holder to transmit lien satisfactions to the state department electronically. This is where there is an e-title with an electronic lien on the vehicle.

What is an ELT Title?

Electronic titles or e-titles are motor vehicle, mobile home or vessel titles held in an electronic form by the state agencies or contracted third parties. ELT titles prove ownership of a motor vehicle, mobile home or vessel the same way a paper title does.

What are the benefits of having an ELT title instead of a paper title?

Electronic titles provide both security and financial benefits to not only the owner, but the state agency as well. ELT Titles are secured behind a limited access system and remove the risk of physical loss of title and potential fraud. By maintaining an electronic record, overhead costs such as postage and inventory are reduced drastically. The Electronic Lien & Title Program (ELT) is a method by which State title departments and a lending institution (lien holder) can exchange vehicle and title information. Instead of printing a paper title and mailing it to the lien holder, the Department can transmit essential identifying information electronically. Once the lien has been satisfied, the lien holder sends an electronic message releasing the title.

What is the Electronic Lien and Title Program?

The Electronic Lien & Title Program (ELT) is a method by which State agencies and a lending institution (lien holder) can exchange vehicle and title information. Instead of printing a paper title and mailing it to the lien holder, the Department can transmit essential identifying information electronically. Once the lien has been satisfied, the lien holder sends an electronic message releasing the title. The MVD then prints and mails the title to the vehicle owner.
